In this article, we will discuss the features of the Nintendo DSi. The Nintendo DSi is an improved model from the DS Lite were one of the first things you will notice is that it has a sturdier and matte body. It has dual cameras that let you take photos inwards and outwards. The new firmware of the Nintendo DSi lets you connect to the online store, upload and share photos, interact with other users, and even plays music.
It has a MB internal storage for storing your photos and music, or you can expand your memory by inserting and SD card in the SD card slot. The Nintendo DSi Sound application lets you record and edit voice and sound recording to distort and adjust them according to the provided audio filters. The Sound application is where you can also play your music files as long as they have AAC format.
The Nintendo DSi store now lets users download games and utility applications and store them in the internal or external memory. One of the downloadable application for the Nintendo DSi is the Wario: Photograph which lets you edit your photos and make them more fun. We'd gladly give up the 4 millimeters to be able to play any Game Boy Advance game. The headphone jack remains in the same spot, but the volume slider found on the Lite's front left edge has been moved and converted into a push-button format on the left side.
We'll agree with the movement of the controls, but we definitely prefer a slider as opposed to buttons. It's much easier to mute the device by sliding your thumb compared with holding down a button for a few seconds.
The device's SD card slot is located on the right edge. As mentioned earlier, the DSi has two 0. A pink LED light glows when the outer camera is active.
The outer casing also abandons the vertical square DS logo modeled in the plastic found on the DS Lite. The included stylus is mounted in the same rear location as the DS Lite, and Nintendo supplies you with a spare. We liked the increased length of the DSi's stylus; it's bumped up another 4 millimeters. Features By far the most significant changes to the DSi, aside from the cameras, is the updated firmware and interface exclusive to the device. This new firmware includes various media and online applications that allow you to interact with photos and music.
The new layout is very much in the vein of the Nintendo Wii experience, where different "channels" or applications can be scrolled through and moved around. There are plenty of blank spaces, too, that you'll undoubtedly fill with downloaded games and applications from the DSi Shop.
The DSi Camera application allows you to take pictures via either camera and store them on the unit's internal MB of storage or onto an SD card.
Aside from taking conventional photos, there are various lens options built into the application. These effects can not only be tweaked while taking photos, but also after you've already shot them. There is even facial recognition technology here that will stamp your face with a Wario mustache or give you a pig nose. There's plenty of fun to be had with the frame features as well; you can put your face on pretty much anything you can shoot.
The DSi Sound application gives you the ability to record and edit sounds by providing easy-to-use, yet powerful tools. You have the ability to increase and lower pitch and speed, even use a collection of preinstalled audio filters that will transform your recorded segments.
These pieces can be saved internally or onto your SD card. The DSi Sound application also allows you to play your own music, even distort it as well.
However, the device can only currently play AAC files. Unfortunately, MP3 and other audio file lovers won't be able to get in on the fun. Additionally, you won't be able to save your edited music. Best Buy laptop deals for January Best air purifiers at CES The two color variations black and blue currently available for the DSi come in a matte finish, which is more susceptible to grease stains from the natural moisture of a player's hands, but overall better for tactile response.
The DSi's cameras are located on the inside hinge and right corner of the outer facing panel of the flip up screen. Both the inside and outside cameras feature predictably low 0. Outside of the context of taking silly pictures of yourself and others, however, the DSi's cameras are practically useless.
Taking photos in dim environments is practically impossible, and if you do manage to take a photo where the subject matter isn't a shapeless black blob, the colors take on a bluish or greenish tinge.
But again, this is the DSi we're talking about, not a Nikon D Similarly, the slight size increase to the DSi's screens is hard to notice, even with both systems sitting side by side. The color representation and picture quality of the DSi's screens are identical to that of the DS Lite, so no big improvements there either.
Of the various hardware differences between the DS Lite and the DSi, the absence of the GameBoy Advance cartridge slot is the only thing that we could see as being a deal-breaker for some consumers. Backwards compatibility was a strong value-added selling point with the DS and DS Lite and it will be interesting to see how much, if at all, consumers react.
It would have been nice to see the GBA slot make the cut, but we can understand how it was omitted in order to cut down on the size of the device. Click here to check out our coverage from the DSi midnight launch in Los Angeles.
But as they say, when one door closes, another one opens and in the case of the DSi, that door is more of a floodgate in the form of support for downloadable software. Wi-Fi support has always been a staple of the DS platform since its introduction in , but now for the first time users will be able to use wireless connectivity to download games and game content directly to their device via the DSi Shop.
Like its full-fledged standalone console sibling, the Wii, the DSi features an online store for downloading new utilities and games for your DSi, opening up the console for constant expansion.
While the firmware has created the method of delivery, it is the DSi's new built-in SD card slot that makes it all possible.
