I don't mind disabling the automatic Windows Update Service -- manually is fine by me also.
I just do not want it to update automatically. I'll go play around a little and see what happens, and what's more convenient in the end. Sure it did! You could turn off the function to update before it runs a scan. Why is it you want it to scan automatically but not with the latest update? Not wanting the updates implies he doesn't want the protection. This, in turn, implies he doesn't want MSE.

I created a firewall rule which blocks Microsoft Security Essential from any outbound connections thus, it wont be able to check definition updates which I know is not recommended but some people like me would be interested. When you want to update the definitions, you could drop the firewall, update, then turn the firewall back on. I would also say to manually download the definitions, but unfortunately that would require downloading the entire package, which is 56MB.
Letting the program update def's allows it to only download what has changed.
